COVID-19
Adrian Whicher
I needed to write about the virus
but it always came out too grim.
After all, it could kill the lot of us!
It has changed all our lives in countless ways
No hugging, no kissing-didn't have that anyway!
But who'd have thought that I'd be missing........
Running for the train?
Delays and cancellations again and again!
Late for work
The colleagues smirk
Balancing the books
The salacious looks
The biscuit tin
The constant din
The boring meetings
The convivial greetings
The strange thing is, we need this!
A structure to our daze
Now I can't tell a good day from bad
Or what day it is, come to that!
The stress has stopped,
but so's that elation when it goes away!
Human beings are complicated, complex, creative creatures,
capable of horrific crimes and war
Unyet we do have redeeming features
Great acts of kindness have shone through this crisis
Great minds worldwide are working to save us all
We've all been reminded what life is really for
All we can do is follow the rules
and wait for science to save us
as it has many times before.

Written 2 days after D-Day
The last time in our history that the greater good overcame a seemingly invincible evil.
